Whats an AST course??

The curriculum is Designed by Avalanche Canada and taught as the standard introductory avalanche course throughout the country.

What does it look like??

Starting with a classroom session which is a combination of online learning and in person lessons (total of approx 6 hrs), you will go over avalanche terminology and characteristics. This session also covers the theory of avalanche companion rescue.

The next 2 days are spent in the field putting theory into practice. You will have the chance to personally apply each skill learned in class with the mentorship of a professional guide. Beginning each day with a morning meeting to go over weather, route plans, and objectives and finishing back in the valley to discuss and debrief.

Do I need to be an expert rider/skiier?

No, you do not need to be an expert, but you should be confident riding all day on intermediate terrain in varying snow conditions.

Is this only for splitboarders?

No way! All boards welcome, though your instructor will probably be boarding!

Do I need an AST1 certificate to take this course?

This should not be your first avalanche course ever. Topics will be covered quickly and in less detail than a traditional course, as it is assumed you have a baseline understanding prior to participating.
